X-Apennines 2026 – A Paragliding Adventure Across the Wild Heart of Italy
Dates: 23 – 28 June 2028
The X-Apennines Paragliding Adventure is a unique guided flying journey across the mountains of central Italy. Over several days, pilots travel through the Apennines by paraglider, launching from one area and landing in another, experiencing the landscape, weather systems, and rhythm of the mountains from the air.
This is not a fixed-site course. It is a true flying adventure, designed for pilots who want to explore new terrain, fly cross-country in unfamiliar areas, and experience parts of Italy that few paragliders ever see.
Location, Next Edition, and Format
- Location: Central Apennines, Italy
- Next edition: 23-28th June 2026
- Format: Guided multi-day paragliding journey
Flying the Apennines: An Adventure in the Air
The Apennines stretch from north to south through the center of Italy and offer a completely different flying experience compared to the Alps. The terrain is varied and wild, with long ridges, isolated massifs, wide valleys, and countless route possibilities.
Flying here means:
- Launching from one mountain and landing in another valley
- Adapting each day to changing weather and conditions
- Exploring remote areas rarely seen from the ground
- Making real cross-country decisions in unfamiliar terrain
The exact route changes every year and even every day, depending on weather, wind, and thermal development. Popular and often visited areas include:
- Poggio Bustone
- Grand Sasso
- Castelluccio
- Monte Subasio
- Leonessa
- L’Aquila
- San Donato
These locations form a loose backbone of the Apennines XC experience, but no two editions are ever the same.
An Adventure First – Skill Development Along the Way
While this is not a traditional training course, pilots naturally improve their flying skills throughout the journey. Flying day after day in new areas sharpens:
- Weather awareness and interpretation
- Route selection and decision-making
- Thermal efficiency in varied terrain
- Confidence when flying outside familiar sites
Guides provide daily briefings, strategic input, and radio support and coaching during flight, but the heart of the experience is the adventure itself: moving through Italy by air, adapting to what the day offers, and making each flight part of a bigger journey.
Who This Adventure Is For
The X-Apennines adventure is designed for independent pilots who are comfortable flying away from their home sites and want to experience a multi-day XC journey.
You should be comfortable with:
- Independent launches and landings
- Thermalling and staying airborne
- Basic cross-country decision-making
This adventure is ideal if you:
- Want to explore new regions by paraglider
- Enjoy flying point-to-point rather than returning to the same landing
- Are curious about Italy’s lesser-known flying areas
- Want to share an XC journey with like-minded pilots
If you are unsure whether this adventure fits your experience level, feel free to contact us before registering.
A Typical Day on the X-Apennines Adventure
Each day is shaped by the weather and terrain. A typical day includes:
- Morning weather briefing and discussion
- Transfer to the launch area
- Cross-country flying toward a new region with radio guidance
- Ground support and retrieve if needed
- Arrival in a new town or valley
Some days end with long glides into wide valleys, others with technical ridge flying or late afternoon transitions. The goal is not distance for its own sake, but progressing safely through the landscape while enjoying the experience.
Evenings: Local Culture, Food, and Hospitality
The X-Apennines adventure doesn’t stop when the gliders are packed. Each evening, the group stays in a different part of the Apennines, discovering local agriturismi, bed & breakfasts, and small mountain towns. Evenings are about enjoying Italian food, local hospitality, and sharing stories from the day’s flights.
Accommodation is booked along the route to match the daily flying progression but is not included in the course price. This allows flexibility and keeps the adventure adaptable to weather and location. These evenings are often as memorable as the flights themselves.
Safety, Guidance, and Local Knowledge
Flying through unfamiliar terrain requires flexibility and sound judgment. The guiding team supports the group with:
- Daily weather analysis
- Launch and landing selection
- Route strategy and timing
- Local knowledge of terrain and conditions
- Radio coaching during flight
The focus is on enabling pilots to enjoy the journey while minimizing unnecessary risks. To read more about your experienced guide, click here.
